In Greek mythology, Medusa was a mortal woman who was transformed into a gorgon, a monster with wings, claws, enormous teeth and snakes for hair. Medusa had the power to turn those she looked at into stone. She was eventually killed by Perseus who watched her through the reflection in his shield.
