English Literature - AS - World's Wife - Pope Joan

Contextual stuff

The legend of Pope Joan first appeared in the C13th and subsequently spread across Europe. The story centres around an English scholar who, disguised as a man, is unanimously elected as Pope in 853AD only to give birth by the roadside during a religious procession two years later. Different versions of the story describe a different ending for the protagonist; she either retires to a nunnery in a state of repentance, dies from natural causes or is killed by an angry mob. It is hard from this distance to know if the story has any basis in truth however it is likely that it was disseminated as a form of anti-papal satire
