History as we understand it begins with the written word. The period before the invention of writing is known as prehistory. Prehistoric Europe was characterised by numerous ice ages, humans living in small groups and depending on nomadic hunting and gathering to survive. We divide the prehistoric period of human history into three eras: stone age, bronze age and iron age, according to what tools and technologies had been developed.
